Treating Parkinson’s with Cholesterol Medications

Statistics indicate that approximately 60,000 adults in the United States and up to 20 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a degenerative disorder characterized by the gradual destruction of neurons that produce dopamine. Researchers believe that the disease is brought on by different factors including chronic inflammation, dysfunctional mitochondria, and oxidative stress. The disorder is typically treated with dopamine supplementation. However, the medication isn’t enough to keep up with the levels of neuron disintegration. There has been little in the way of finding an effective treatment in the last four decades, but that may soon change. Researchers are currently evaluating the effects that a cholesterol agent known as simvastatin might have on the neurological disease.

Recent studies regarding statin medication’s effects in multiple sclerosis proved promising. Research indicates that the medication seems to inhibit the development of alpha-nuclein clumps in nerve tissue. As this is a common problem for those with PD, researchers hypothesize that simvastatin might slow the progression of the disease. Statins have already proven to increase natural dopamine levels, which is why scientists believe they can be the key to effectively treating PD. 

The Cure Parkinson’s Trust is currently conducting a double-blind clinical trial involving those with PD and any potential benefit they experience while taking the statins. The trial consists of 198 volunteers chosen from across the United Kingdom. All participants will undergo the study at the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
