Your Trusted Local Home Care Provider
As seniors get older, it’s not uncommon for them to need various medications for a variety of health-related issues, and it often falls to in-home caregivers to help manage medications. If you provide home care for a senior loved one, be sure to ask the following questions during your next visit to the pharmacy to ensure the safety and health of your elderly loved one.
Is This Medication Available in Generic Form?
Although this question is not necessarily related to your loved one’s health, it does affect his or her wellbeing by making medication more affordable. Some insurance plans only cover generic, and it makes a huge difference for seniors who are often living on a limited income if comparable medication is available at a cheaper price.
What Are Some Possible Side Effects?
Sometimes the side effects experienced by seniors are worse than the ailment they are being treated for, largely because seniors metabolize medication differently and side effects are often intensified. If there are certain side effects that may not be tolerated, ask the pharmacist about alternative medications.
Will There Be Drug Interaction Issues?
Oftentimes, seniors are prescribed several different medications simultaneously for different issues. Make sure the pharmacist is aware of this, and ask about possible drug interaction problems to avoid any serious consequences.
Is the Medication Available in OTC form?
The pharmacist should be able to tell you if the drug prescribed for your loved one is available in an over-the-counter form. This may equate to less cost and easier access when it is time for a refill.
Does This Drug Aggravate Any Existing Conditions?
Some drugs should not be taken when a senior has a preexisting condition. For example, ulcers are sometimes exacerbated by certain medications and others medications shouldn’t be taken by seniors with high blood pressure.
These questions and others should be asked to keep your loved one safe and happy. Don’t be afraid to have the pharmacist explain how the medication works and dosage requirements, even if it is not a new prescription.
